How to Properly Trim A Candle Wick

Trimming a candle wick may seem like a small, insignificant step—but it’s one of the most important things you can do to keep your candle burning clean, safe, and long-lasting. Many people skip this step, not realizing that a long or untrimmed wick can cause a host of problems: big, flickering flames, soot, uneven burning, and a shorter candle lifespan. If you’re new to candle care, don’t worry—trimming a wick is easy, and we’re breaking it down in this simple beginner’s guide from Delphy Candle.

First, why is trimming a wick so important? A long wick burns faster, creates more soot, and can cause the candle to overheat. It also leads to uneven burning, which wastes wax and reduces the candle’s scent throw. Trimming the wick to the right length ensures a clean, steady flame that burns slowly and evenly—extending your candle’s life and making it safer to use.

What you’ll need: You don’t need any fancy tools to trim a candle wick—though a small wick trimmer (available at most home goods stores) makes it easier. If you don’t have a wick trimmer, a pair of sharp scissors or nail clippers will work too. You’ll also need a tissue or paper towel to catch the trimmed wick pieces.

Step 1: Wait for the candle to cool completely. Never trim a wick while the candle is lit or the wax is hot—this can be dangerous, and the wick may be too soft to trim cleanly. Let the candle cool for at least 2 hours after burning before trimming.

Step 2: Trim the wick to 1/4 inch. This is the ideal length for most candles (including Delphy Candle’s soy wax candles). Hold the wick trimmer (or scissors) at a 45-degree angle and snip the wick—make sure not to cut it too short (less than 1/8 inch) or too long (more than 1/2 inch). Cutting it too short can make it hard to light, while cutting it too long will cause the problems we mentioned earlier.

Step 3: Remove the trimmed wick pieces. After trimming, use a tissue or paper towel to gently remove the small wick pieces from the top of the wax. If you leave them in, they can burn and create soot, or fall into the wax and ruin the candle.

Step 4: Repeat before every burn. Trimming the wick isn’t a one-time step—you should trim it before every time you light the candle. This ensures a clean, safe burn every time, and extends the life of your candle.

Pro tips for beginners: If you’re using scissors, be careful not to lean too close to the candle jar —you don’t want to accidentally scratch or break it. If the wick is crooked, gently straighten it after trimming (while it’s cool) to ensure even burning. And if you forget to trim the wick and the flame gets too big, blow out the candle, let it cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
