Why Is My Candle Burning Uneven?

There’s nothing more frustrating than lighting a beautiful scented candle, only to find it burning unevenly—leaving wax on one side, tunneling down the middle, or burning too fast on one end. Uneven burning not only wastes wax but also shortens your candle’s life and reduces its scent throw. But the good news is, uneven burning is usually easy to fix—and most of the time, it’s caused by simple mistakes in how you burn or store your candle. At Delphy Candle, we’re sharing the most common causes of uneven burning and quick fixes to help you get the most out of your candle.

First, let’s talk about the most common cause: not letting the first burn melt all the way across. As we mentioned earlier, the first burn is crucial. If you blow out your candle before the entire top layer of wax is liquid, it will form a tunnel—where the wax melts only in the center, leaving a ring of unused wax around the edges. This is the #1 cause of uneven burning, and it’s easy to fix.

Quick fix for tunneling: Next time you light your candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax is liquid (1–2 hours). If your candle already has a tunnel, you can fix it by wrapping a piece of aluminum foil around the top of the jar, leaving a small opening for the flame. The foil will reflect heat back into the wax, melting the unused edges and evening out the burn.

Another common cause of uneven burning is a long or crooked wick. A long wick causes a large, flickering flame that burns wax unevenly, while a crooked wick will burn more on one side than the other. This is easy to fix with a simple wick trim.

Quick fix for long/crooked wick: Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before each burn. If the wick is crooked, gently straighten it while it’s cool (be careful not to break it). This will keep the flame steady and ensure even burning.

Drafts are also a major culprit of uneven burning. A draft (from an open window, fan, or air conditioner) will make the flame dance, causing the wax to melt faster on one side. This is especially common in small apartments or rooms with poor airflow.

Quick fix for drafts: Move your candle to a still area, away from any air flow. If you can’t avoid drafts, try placing the candle behind a small barrier (like a book or a decorative object) to block the wind. This will keep the flame steady and the wax melting evenly.

Finally, uneven burning can be caused by a candle that’s not level. If your candle is placed on an uneven surface, the wax will melt more on one side than the other. This is an easy fix that’s often overlooked.

Quick fix for uneven surfaces: Place your candle on a level, flat surface (like a table or shelf). If your surface is uneven, use a small coaster or mat to level it out. This will ensure the wax melts evenly and your candle burns properly.

At Delphy Candle, our candles are designed to burn evenly, but even the best candles can burn unevenly if not cared for properly. By following these quick fixes, you can fix uneven burning, reduce wax waste, and extend the life of your favorite Delphy Candle.
